Today we announced the release of our annual Sustainability 100 report ranking the top 100 companies leading globally in their digital sustainability communications. The report also details insights and practical advice for companies seeking to create more compelling sustainability narratives and shares quantitative benchmarks for best practices in digital communications.

The brands with the strongest sustainability communications included:

  1. Bayer 85%
  2. Shell 82%
  3. Unilever 81%
  4. Equinix 76%
  5. AMD 76%
  6. Nestlé 76%
  7. Kellogg Company 75%
  8. Rio Tinto 75%
  9. Sainsbury’s 75%
  10. Eni 74%
  11. H&M Group 73%
  12. Bank of America 73%
  13. United Utilities Group 73%
  14. Microsoft 72%
  15. Siemens 72%
  16. BP 72%
  17. Coca-Cola 71%
  18. Vodafone 71%
  19. BHP 69%
  20. Walmart 69%

To evaluate and rank the sustainability communications of more than 1,000 websites across the United States, United Kingdom and Europe, we used a proprietary Connect.IQ benchmarking tool assessing how well each company discussed its commitment to sustainability. The tool emphasized the effectiveness and transparency of the communications shared via a company’s websites, and found that:

  • Four-in-five (82%) companies had a dedicated ESG strategy page stated on their website
  • More than half (56%) included their targets
  • Two-thirds (67%) of companies detailed their ESG ratings

The report’s findings further demonstrate that investors—as well as consumers and employees—prioritize organizations with a proven sustainability track record. In particular, investors consistently consider sustainability risks in their decision making, providing further justification as to why companies should address these issues to ensure long-term, profitable growth.

“Investors, customers and employees alike rely on a company’s website as a home base for sustainability-related information,” said Myles Peacock, Global CEO, IDX. “We believe that the content companies choose to publish sets the tone for their corporate narrative, and by exploring this in detail, we’ve not only been able to identify those brands that communicate most effectively through their digital content, but grasp best practices as well.”

Recently, we published a report based on a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting, shedding light on the detrimental effects of disconnected marketing technology and advertising technology strategies. That study showed that nearly half (47%) of executive decision makers acknowledge that poorly utilized martech and adtech platforms creates wasted time, budget, effort and resources, which contributes to a global sustainability problem.
